International Cookie Swap

December 19, 2011

The holiday season doesn’t officially begin
for me until my kitchen counters are dusted in a blanket of flour and sugar and
every room smells of freshly baked cookies. As much as I love hauling out my own
rolling pin, I can’t wait to receive edible gifts from friends and family
featuring their own beloved and traditional cookie recipes. So what better way
to kick off the holiday festivities than to turn on the oven and gather with
friends for a cookie swap? You’ll have an overflowing cookie jar of sweet treats
to share and enjoy all month long. These holiday cookie recipes from around the
world will be a perfect globe-trotting addition to the sugary exchange. And
because no cookie extravaganza is complete without the perfect drink to wash it
all down, I’ve included a variation on hot chocolate that is guaranteed to keep
your party guests warm and cozy. Read more….

By the time December rolls around, your calendar is likely
filled with holiday work parties, social engagements, and gatherings with family
and friends. Such merriment is part of the season and welcomed by many a
socialite. But if you’ve struggled making small talk with strangers and distant
acquaintances in years past, those same gatherings can be a source of anxiety
and dread.  Read more….

Beachfront in Brazil with Jaw-Dropping Views

December 5, 2011

Sometimes interior designers require
remarkable artwork, luxurious fabrics, and antique furniture to complete a
living space; other times, all they need is a view.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an international
city known for its lavish Carnival and tropical landscape, it’s the windows that
frame the city’s natural works of art. In this ninth-floor penthouse apartment,
towering above the world-famous Copacabana Beach, an entire wall of
floor-to-ceiling windows showcases a breathtaking view of the South Atlantic and
all the excitement of this desirable destination. Read more…..

History Restored

November 28, 2011

A  few years ago, when Molly Fienning and her husband, Ted, who flies F18s for the
U.S. Marines, found out they would be stationed in Beaufort, South Carolina,
they immediately knew they wanted to live in a historic home. Having grown up in
Sumter, South Carolina, Ted was aware of Beaufort’s rich heritage, which is
chock-full of significant Civil War history and antebellum architecture. “We
wanted to support the historic district,” says Molly. “We love the idea of being
in an old house—that’s part of the charm of Beaufort. The antebellum
architecture is breathtaking.” Read more….

Small Is Beautiful

November 14, 2011

In the capable hands of New York City–based
interior designer Keith Lichtman, small is beautiful. He has transformed a
750-square-foot New York City apartment into a showplace that functions superbly
as living space, and feels much bigger than it really is. The place also
reflects Lichtman’s trademark technique of combining vintage pieces with modern,
creating a stimulating, eclectic mix. Read more…

A Harvest Menu

November 7, 2011

As leaves turn rich shades of red, orange,
and gold, blustery fall winds sweep in and leave us craving heart-warming
dinners. But as long as days are mild and fall sports are in full swing, I like
to limit my time in the kitchen and take advantage of the fun outdoors. These
recipes are the perfect answer. They’re full of warm, aromatic spices and hearty
vegetables to combat the chill creeping in, without requiring long hours by the
stove. They come together in dishes that are easy to prep ahead and quick to
bring to the table for impromptu gatherings after the game or weeknight evenings
soaking up gentle rays of sun in the backyard. Read more…

A Petite Pied-a-terre

October 24, 2011

In densely populated cities, space may be limited, but style is boundless. People
flock to these cultural melting pots for the experience—the art, the cuisine,
the shows, the fashion, and the infinite energy. And in the heart of frenzied
Midtown Manhattan, surrounded by landmarks and cultural centers such as the
Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rockefeller Center, and the Empire
State Building, stands The Setai Fifth Avenue. This soaring sixty-story tower is
a newly established hotel and condo building and the location of this
pied-a-terre. The city might never sleep, but eventually the people must. Read more…
