Putting Up Produce

Author Robyn Roehm Cannon writes, “When I was growing up in the 1950s, the produce department in our neighborhood A&P store had only the basics: iceberg lettuce, carrots, potatoes, celery, apples, and sometimes oranges. There was probably more, but my mom bought vegetables in the can most of the time. Delicate corn, crisp English peas, juicy beefsteak tomatoes, and lusciously fragrant fruits arrived only in the hot summer months and were long anticipated the rest of the year”. Read more…
