Though Pinehurst and Southern Pines are known mainly for the golf options—there are forty-three golf courses in the area, including the acclaimed Pinehurst Resort No. 2, which will host the men’s and women’s U.S. Open in 2014—the towns are also home to a world-class spa, fine dining, and quaint shopping, making it a must-see destination. There’s a good reason why people flock here throughout the year, especially in the fall and spring, when the weather is mild and the foliage is breathtaking: years ago it was thought that the scent of the pine trees had a relaxing effect, so families would head to Southern Pines for rest and relaxation.
